Between the crib and a full twin there is an awkward stretch where neither quite fits. The junior is Sapiens Child's answer, a middle ground bed with the mattress at floor level, low sides around the head end, and a shelf at the foot so the books and the water cup live where a child can reach them.

It is handmade in Vancouver by Sapiens Child from maple and birch plywood, in a workshop rather than a factory line, and the wood you choose above, birch or maple, changes the finish and the price, nothing else.

What you are getting

A junior size floor bed at ground level The in between size, longer than a crib and narrower than a twin, with low sides around the head end.

The shelf at the foot Holds 40 lbs across three or more adjustable levels, a built in nightstand for the bedtime pile.

Maple and birch plywood Hardwood plywood, never plastic. The finish details for each wood are in the drop downs below.

A slatted base for airflow The slats keep the mattress lifted and air moving underneath. No box spring, nothing else to buy.

Materials and certification

The frame is maple and birch plywood with rounded corners and edges, and no plastic parts. Maple is hand varnished with subtly tinted edges. Birch comes pre finished with a clear coat that shows the grain of each plywood layer.

Sapiens Child states the plywood meets the strict CARB standards for formaldehyde emissions, and marks the materials as FSC certified.

Each bed is handmade in Vancouver, Canada.

Assembly and care

The bed ships flat and the manual is in the box. Two people and an unhurried hour is the comfortable way to do it. Follow the manufacturer's manual for placement, clearances and any age guidance.

Wipe the frame with a damp cloth and dry it. Check the fixings every few months and after the bed has been moved, and retighten anything that has worked loose.

Birch or maple

The construction, the dimensions, the standards and the weight ratings are identical. The differences are the finish and the price, shown in the picker above. Maple is hand varnished with subtly tinted edges for a lighter, more uniform Scandinavian look. Birch comes pre finished with a clear coat that shows the natural grain of each plywood layer and runs slightly warmer in tone. Neither is the wrong answer.
