A crib with bars asks a baby to wait to be lifted out. This bed puts the same crib mattress at floor level instead, with rails along the sides to keep a small sleeper snug and a shelf at the foot for the books and the water cup, so the room starts working for your child rather than around them.

Sapiens Child makes it by hand in Vancouver from maple and birch plywood, in a workshop rather than a factory line, and the wood you choose above, birch or maple, changes the finish and the price, nothing else.

What you are getting

A crib size floor bed at ground level The slats are included and carry the mattress directly. No box spring, nothing else to buy.

Rails along the sides Protective rails keep a small sleeper snug, with an opening so they can get in and out on their own.

The shelf at the foot Holds 40 lbs across four adjustable levels, for books, baskets and whatever needs to be within reach at bedtime.

The frame is maple and birch plywood with rounded corners and edges, and no plastic parts. Maple is hand varnished with subtly tinted edges. Birch comes pre finished with a clear coat that shows the grain of each plywood layer.

Assembly and care

Assembly is required and the manual is in the box. Two people and an unhurried hour is the comfortable way to do it. Follow the manufacturer's manual for placement, clearances and any age guidance.

Wipe the frame with a damp cloth and dry it. Check the fixings every few months and after the bed has been moved, and retighten anything that has worked loose.

Birch or maple

The construction, the dimensions, the standards and the weight ratings are identical. The differences are the finish and the price, shown in the picker above. Maple is hand varnished with subtly tinted edges for a lighter, more uniform Scandinavian look. Birch comes pre finished with a clear coat that shows the natural grain of each plywood layer and runs slightly warmer in tone. Neither is the wrong answer.
