Best Baby Playpens in Canada: How to Choose One That Gets Used

Most playpen advice online is written by people who have never tried to fit one into a Canadian condo living room. This is our attempt at the opposite: what actually matters, what does not, and the situations where we would tell you not to buy one at all.

We should say upfront that we sell playpens. That is a good reason to read this critically, so we have tried to write the guide we would want to read ourselves, including the parts that cost us sales.

First, do you actually need one?

A playpen solves exactly one problem: you cannot watch a mobile baby every second of the day. If you have a room you can fully baby proof and a door you can gate, you may not need one at all. Gates are cheaper and take no floor space.

Where a playpen earns its money is in open plan homes, rooms you cannot fully proof, houses with a dog or an older sibling, and apartments where the kitchen and the living room are the same room. If one of those describes your home, keep reading.

The two types

Modular panels Foam bumper

Modular panel playpens

Rigid panels that clip together into whatever shape your room allows. A square, an L, a long room divider, or opened out flat as a barrier across a doorway. The panels are usually a hard PE construction and they wipe clean in seconds.

Choose this if your room is an awkward shape, you want to reconfigure it as your child grows, or you need to block a specific hazard rather than contain a specific area.

The trade off is that panels are hard. A baby learning to stand will fall against them. Most families end up putting a mat inside, which pushes the real cost up, so budget for both from the start.

Foam bumper play pens

Soft walled, usually built onto or paired with a mat, so the whole thing is one cushioned unit. The walls are low enough for you to step over and soft enough to fall against. Several of them convert: walls down, and it becomes a play mat, or a bumper bed for an older toddler.

Choose this if you have hard floors, a baby at the pulling to stand stage, or you want one purchase that keeps being useful after the pen phase ends.

The trade off is that the shape is fixed and the footprint is larger. You cannot reshape it around a room the way panels allow.

How much floor space you actually need

Measure the floor, not the baby Mark it out with tape before you order

This is where most regrets come from. Before ordering anything, put masking tape on the floor in the exact dimensions listed on the product page and live with it for a day. Walk around it. Open the doors it sits near. Sit inside it yourself.

Two things people consistently underestimate. First, you need clear space on the outside as well, because you will be stepping over it a dozen times a day carrying things. Second, a pen that fills the room stops the room being usable by adults, and a pen that gets moved to the basement in month two was not a bargain at any price.

Five things worth checking before you buy

  1. What it is made of, specifically. "Non toxic" on its own means nothing. Ask which substances the product has been tested for and by whom. Our own lab reports are published in full on our certifications page, and coverage varies by product, which we say plainly there.
  2. Whether the panels lock or just clip. A determined ten month old will find the weak joint. Look for a locking mechanism rather than friction fit alone.
  3. How it cleans. Sealed, wipeable surfaces beat fabric for anything used before the milk stage ends. If it has a cover, check whether that cover is removable and machine washable.
  4. Whether the mat and pen are designed to fit each other. On convertible sets they are matched. Buying separately, check both sets of dimensions, because "roughly the same size" is not the same as fitting.
  5. Where it ships from. A playpen ordered from a US or overseas seller can arrive with a customs bill attached. Everything in our play mats and play pens collection ships from within Canada, and the exceptions are set out in our shipping policy.

What we would skip

Mesh travel pens as a main pen. They fold small and they are excellent in a hotel room. As the thing your baby spends two hours a day in, they are cramped and they offer nothing to pull up on.

Anything with electronics built into the wall. The lights and sounds hold attention for a fortnight, then break, and you cannot remove them.

Buying the biggest one available. Bigger is not better if it means the pen dominates the room. Most families use less of the space than they expect.

Common questions

What age is a playpen useful for?

Typically from when a baby starts moving independently, roughly six to nine months, until somewhere near two, when most children begin objecting to being contained. Modular panel sets stretch that a little, because you can open them out into a room divider rather than a pen.

Will it slide on hardwood?

Heavier foam sets usually stay put under their own weight. Lighter panel sets can shift when a toddler pushes against them, so check whether the set includes floor grips, and consider a mat underneath on very smooth floors.

Is a playpen bad for development?

Used as a safe base for an hour here and there, no. Used as somewhere a child spends most of the day, it limits the crawling and cruising they need to be doing. The honest guidance is the boring kind: it is a tool for the moments you cannot supervise, not a default setting.

Where to start

If you have hard floors and a baby pulling to stand, start with a foam bumper play pen. If your room is an awkward shape or you need to block a specific hazard, start with modular panels and a mat. If you are not sure, measure the space, tape it out, and email us the dimensions at hello@truelittlenorth.com. We are a small family business in Toronto and we will tell you what we would put in that room, including if the answer is a gate rather than a pen.
