Kids Couch Buying Guide: How to Choose a Play Couch in Canada
A kids couch has two jobs. It is somewhere to sit for a story or a film, and it is a set of soft pieces that becomes a fort, a tunnel or an obstacle course the moment you leave the room. The sets that do both well have three things in common: foam that holds its shape, covers you can actually clean, and pieces that fit together in more than one way.
We sell play couches, so read this critically. We have tried to write the guide we would want to read, including the parts that make some sets look less impressive than their photos.
Seat or set?
A single kids sofa or armchair is furniture. It sits in one place and does one thing. A modular play couch is a building set that happens to make a sofa. Every set we carry is the second kind, and that changes what you should judge it on: not how it looks as a sofa, but how many useful shapes the pieces make and how they survive being rebuilt every day.
The same four pieces, two jobs. Judge a play couch on the shapes it makes, not only on the sofa.
Five things that decide it
1. The foam
Soft play takes a beating. Foam that is too soft sags into a hollow within months and stops holding a fort together. Look for a stated density, and for a named certification on the foam rather than a general promise. Go Coconut state their foam is CertiPUR-US certified high density foam made in Canada. Other sets in our range describe their foam as high density or high resilience without naming a foam certification, and we would rather tell you that than leave it implied.
2. The covers
This is the difference you will notice every week. Some covers go in the washing machine, some come off but are hand wash only, and some do not come off at all and are spot clean. If the couch will meet juice, crayons and a toddler with a cold, machine washable covers are worth paying for.
3. The pieces
More pieces is not automatically better. What matters is whether the pieces are proportioned to each other. Go Coconut design their beams to match the length and height of the base cushions, which is what lets one set become a castle, a tunnel or a ramp. Smaller sets with two folding mats and two wedges make fewer shapes but take less space.
4. The space, built and stored
Measure twice: once for the sofa layout, and once for the biggest fort your child will build, because that is the footprint you will actually live with. Check the dimensions on the product page against your floor before you order.
5. Where it is made
Go Coconut couches are designed and manufactured in Canada. The other sets we carry do not publish a country of manufacture on the product page.

Figures and statements are as published on each product page. Where something has not been published, we say so rather than guess. Ask us and we will request it.
If you already own a Go Coconut, the walls, doors, wedges and rockers in the Go Coconut collection are designed to work with the same pieces, so the set can grow rather than be replaced.
Safe play on a soft couch
Soft does not mean anything goes. Children will climb and jump on a play couch, so treat it like any climbing toy: give it clear space on every side, keep it away from windows, radiators and the hard corners of other furniture, and stay close when the forts get tall. Our Safety First page covers placement in more detail.
The short version: decide whether you want a seat or a building set, check the cover care before the colour, and look for a named certification on the foam.
Common questions
Kids couch or play couch: is there a difference?
People use both names. In practice a kids couch can mean a single small sofa, while a play couch means a set of foam pieces that rebuild into different shapes. Everything in our range is the modular kind.
How do I clean a play couch?
Follow the care label for your set. Machine washable covers come off and go in the wash; hand wash covers come off but stay out of the machine; spot clean covers stay on and are cleaned in place. Check which one you are buying before you buy it.
Is a play couch worth it in a small space?
It can be, if you measure the built footprint rather than the sofa footprint and choose a smaller set. A two mat set stores more easily than a full set of beams and cushions.
Do you ship across Canada?
Yes. Delivery times and any regional exceptions are in our shipping policy.
