Best Learning Towers and Toddler Towers in Canada: What to Check Before You Buy
A learning tower is a platform with rails that lifts a toddler to counter height safely. You will also see it sold as a toddler tower or a kitchen helper. That is the entire product. Everything else is a decision about folding, footprint and finish, and this is how we would make those decisions.
We sell learning towers, so read this critically. We have tried to include the parts that lose us sales, because a tower bought for the wrong kitchen ends up in a garage and nobody wins.
Why not just a chair?
A chair has one surface and nothing to stop a fall. A tower has rails on all four sides.
Because a chair tips, and because a toddler leaning forward over a counter from a chair has nothing behind them. A tower encloses the child on all four sides while leaving their hands free, which is the difference between watching them anxiously and actually letting them help.
The practical effect is that a two year old can wash vegetables, stir, pour and put things away, which is where the Montessori argument comes from. Independence at the kitchen counter is one of the few genuinely useful things a piece of furniture can buy you.
Folding or fixed?
This is the decision that matters most in a Canadian home, because most of us do not have a large kitchen.
Slim and storable
Collapses to a few inches and slides beside the fridge. If your kitchen is a galley, or the tower has to disappear before dinner guests arrive, this is the one you will actually keep using.
Trade off: more moving parts, and it must lock open properly every time.
Solid and simple
Nothing to fold means nothing to fail. Often steadier, usually cheaper, and several convert into a small table and chair when the tower phase ends.
Trade off: it lives in your kitchen permanently. Measure honestly.
Our blunt advice: if you have to think about where it will go, buy the folding one. A tower in the way is a tower that gets moved, and a tower that gets moved gets used half as often.
Five things worth checking
- Adjustable platform height. Canadian counters are usually around 36 inches, but islands and bathroom sinks are not. A platform with two or three height positions covers the whole range and adds years of use.
- Rails on all four sides, including behind. The back rail is the one cheaper towers leave out, and the back is where a child steps off without looking.
- The footprint, measured properly. Tape the dimensions onto your floor and open the dishwasher, the oven and the fridge with it there. This takes five minutes and prevents the most common regret.
- How the child gets in. A step at the right height means they climb up alone. Too high and you are lifting them every time, which quietly defeats the purpose.
- Weight limit and materials. Both are listed on each product page. Where a range has been independently tested, the reports are on our certifications page, and coverage varies by product.

Figures are as published by each manufacturer on the product page. Where a number has not been published, we say so rather than estimate it. Ask us and we will request it.
Safety, honestly
A learning tower does not make a kitchen safe. It puts a small person within reach of a hot hob, a kettle cord and a knife block, so the tower is only half the job.
- Position it away from the stove, not beside it
- Move kettle and appliance cords back before they get up
- Check the locks are fully engaged every single time on a folding model
- Stay in the room. A tower is a tool for cooking together, not a way to be hands free
We do not set our own age ratings. Each manufacturer states an age range and a weight limit on the product page, and that is the guidance to follow. Our safety recommendations cover the general principles.
The tower solves the height problem. You still have to solve the kitchen.
TRUE LITTLE NORTH
What they will actually do up there
Less cooking than you imagine, at first. Expect washing things in a bowl of water for a very long time, tipping cups from one container to another, and squashing whatever you give them. That is not a failure of the tower, it is what a two year old does with a counter.
The genuine cooking comes later, around three, and it arrives faster because of the year they spent standing there watching at eye level rather than from the floor.
Common questions
Learning tower, toddler tower, kitchen helper: is there a difference?
No. They are three names for the same thing, a raised platform with rails that brings a child to counter height. Shop by the checks above rather than by the name on the listing.
Do you sell Canadian made learning towers?
Yes, two. The Sapiens Child Adjustable Toddler Tower is made in Canada, and the All Circles Toddler Tower is made in Moorefield, Ontario. Both are also in our Canadian made toddler towers collection.
Which learning tower is the safest?
No independent body ranks learning towers, so be wary of anyone who says theirs is the safest. Look for rails on all four sides, a published maximum load, locks that fully engage on a folding model, and a platform you can set so their chest sits near the counter. Then follow the manufacturer's guidance and stay in the room.
How long will they use it?
Longer than most furniture in that price bracket. Adjustable platforms extend it, and converting models turn into a small desk or table afterwards, which is worth factoring into the cost per year rather than the sticker price.
Will it fit under my counter?
Check the platform height against your counter, not the total tower height. You want the child's waist near counter level, roughly, so their elbows can rest on it. Dimensions are on every product page.
Does it need assembling?
Usually, yes, and folding models can take longer because of the mechanism. The leg&go Ultra Slim is the exception in our range and arrives fully assembled. Assembly detail is on each product page. Do it properly and check every fixing is tight before first use.
Do you ship from Canada?
Yes. Everything in our range ships from within Canada, so no customs charges on arrival. Delivery times and regional exceptions are in our shipping policy.
WHERE TO START
Measure first, then choose
Tape out the footprint, open every door and drawer it will sit near, then browse our learning towers and kitchen helpers. If the kitchen is tight, filter to the folding models first.
Send us your counter height and floor space at hello@truelittlenorth.com and we will tell you which one we would put in that kitchen. We are a small family business in Toronto and these come to us directly.
