A baby who has started moving needs somewhere they cannot get out of, and you need to be able to see them from the kitchen. Most playpens fail one half of that. They are either too small to be worth playing in, or the walls are too low to hold a toddler who has worked out how to climb.

This baby playpen comes in two sizes, each built around a play mat rather than around a number on a box. Ten panels enclose a 200 x 140cm mat, fourteen enclose 200 x 280cm, and the panels stand 68cm. The Ggumbi Licoco play mat is sold separately.

The panels are PE, polyethylene, and the connectors are PP, polypropylene. Both are in common use in children's products for durability and for how they behave in a child's mouth.

Ggumbi Co., Ltd., who manufacture this playpen in Korea, state that the materials are BPA free and are inspected from the raw material stage rather than only at the finished product.

Assembly and care

Panels join with a double-directional clip connector, so no tools are needed. Set it up on a flat floor, since the anti-slip pads need an even surface to grip. Fit the fixing band to the connector on the inside first, then fasten it to the mat. Doing it in that order is what stops gaps opening up later. Follow the manufacturer's manual for placement, clearances and any age guidance.

Wipe the panels with a damp cloth and dry them. PE does not absorb spills, so nothing needs to soak. Check the connectors and the fixing band every few months and after the pen has been moved.

Band to the connector on the inside, then the mat. This is what stops gaps opening.

Questions we get asked

Does the playpen come with the mat?

No. They are sold separately and sized to pair. The playpen is the fence, the Licoco mat is the floor.

Which size do I need?

200 × 140cm takes one Licoco mat, 200 × 280cm takes two. The table above has the footprints in feet.

Will it slide on hardwood?

The connectors carry anti slip pads with a wide contact area. On the larger layout the anti loosening band makes a noticeable difference.

Can a toddler open the door?

The door uses a double lock button that has to be gripped and held rather than pushed.

How do I clean it?

Wipe with a damp cloth and dry it. Neither the PE frame nor the mat surface absorbs spills.
