Montessori Organization Mini Shelf - Made In Canada Maple $239.00

Made in Canada Designed and built here by Sapiens Child, from furniture grade maple or birch plywood. Not designed here and made overseas.

A shelf built low enough that a child reaches it without asking. Which is the entire point, and the thing most children's storage gets wrong by putting the useful shelves above their head.

Raised borders on the top hold a water jug or a cup steady enough to pour from. Maple or birch plywood, light enough to move between rooms, and small enough to fit where a bookcase will not.

What makes it useful

Built at their height Low enough that they take things down and put them back without help, which is the whole reason for buying it.
Raised top borders Lips on the top surface. A jug, a cup or a tray of materials stays put rather than sliding off the edge.
Removable hooks Hooks that come off if you do not want them, for bags, aprons or whatever is being hung up this month.
Finished properly Rounded corners, every screw hole filled, and the edges varnished rather than left raw. You notice it when it arrives.

Materials and marks, as stated by Sapiens Child

Made in Canada Designed and built here by Sapiens Child, which is unusual enough in this category to be the reason we stock them.
Meets CARB formaldehyde limits The plywood complies with CARB formaldehyde emission limits, which is a named standard rather than a vague reassurance.
Maple or birch plywood Furniture grade hardwood plywood, not particle board and not plastic.
Varnished, faces and edges Sapiens Child finish the edges as well as the faces, and fill the screw holes, which is the part most makers skip.

These are the manufacturer's statements rather than testing we hold ourselves. Our certifications page sets out exactly what we hold and what we do not.

Dimensions and fit

Every measurement is on the diagram. Check the height against your child rather than against the wall, since reachability is the point of this piece.

Maple or birch
Maple and birch plywood colour comparison

Both are furniture grade hardwood plywood, built the same way and carrying the same CARB compliance. The difference is the wood and the price.

Maple is the denser of the two, with a paler and more even grain, and it is the more expensive option. Birch has more visible figure and costs less.

Neither is a downgrade. If you are matching existing Sapiens Child pieces, the image above shows the two side by side.

Assembly, use and care

It arrives flat packed with fixings and instructions, and is light enough for one person to build and move.

Set it on a flat floor against a wall. As with any freestanding furniture in a child's room, put heavier items on the lower shelf rather than the top, and follow our Safety First page for placement.

The hooks come off if you would rather not have them. Keep the screws somewhere findable in case you want them back later.

Wipe with a damp cloth and dry it rather than leaving water standing on the varnish. Check the fixings every few months and retighten anything that has worked loose.

Shipping and returns

Free shipping across Canada and the contiguous USA. Orders leave us in 1 to 5 business days.

Because it is made in Canada, there is no customs duty and no ocean freight in the timeline.

30 days to return it from the day it arrives. Return shipping is paid by you unless the fault is ours, and there is no restocking fee.

Not sure whether this or one of the larger shelves suits the room? Send us the wall space and your child's height and we will tell you honestly, including if the answer is buying less. hello@truelittlenorth.com
