Designed and built here by Sapiens Child, from furniture grade maple or birch plywood. Not designed here and made overseas.
A child who cannot read chooses a book by its cover. On a normal shelf they see thirty spines and pull them all out. Facing forward, they see four covers and pick one.
Four to five books sit face out at the front, with room for about fifteen stacked behind. Rotate what is on display every week or two and the same books hold their attention for longer.
Why forward facing
Covers, not spines
A child who cannot read yet chooses by the picture. Spines are useless to them, and they empty the shelf looking.
Four out, fifteen in
Four to five face forward and about fifteen fit in total, so the rest live behind rather than in another room.
Made to rotate
Swap the front four every week or two. The same books come back interesting rather than being ignored on a full shelf.
Small and light
Compact enough for a corner, light enough to move. Rounded corners, screw holes filled, edges varnished.
